Interesting Facts about Cleopatra you may not Know

Cleopatra has always been a fascinating figure in history and despite her flaws she is actually a pretty good role model for women. Strong, intelligent and charismatic were just some of her qualities.

Below are a list of interesting facts about Cleopatra that you probably don’t know. Feel free to add more in the comments section if I missed any.

Cleopatra actually was not an Egyptian. She was a Macedonian.
Cleopatra was the last pharaoh of Egypt and the only woman pharaoh. Quite an accomplishment in a very male dominated world.
Cleopatra was one of seven women who bore that name during that period. Her own daughter was also called Cleopatra.
Her best friend from her childhood until her death was a Eunich named Mardian.
Cleopatra actually thought she was descended from gods and that her mother was Isis.
Cleo was only 18 when she came into power.
Cleopatra was one of 6 children. She had 2 older sisters, 1 younger sister and 2 younger brothers.
She actually married one of her brothers Ptolemy XIV, which was a tradition among pharaohs. It’s reported that she also married her other brother too, Ptolemy XIII. Ewwwww.
Cleopatra was the only pharaoh in over 300 years that could speak Egyptian.
In fact she could actually speak 8 different languages. Some reports say 9, but either way, that’s quite impressive.
It is always assumed that she was quite beautiful, having powerful men fall all over themselves for her and even fighting wars for her. Actually Cleopatra was not very attractive at all. Her image is on ancient coins (see above) and shows a somewhat homely woman. Her beauty was in her intellect, persuasion and personality.
Cleopatra had 4 children: Ptolemy Caesar from Julius Caesar, twins Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene and son Ptolemy Philadelphos from Marc Antony.
In one of the greatest love stories in history, Cleopatra committed suicide when she heard Mac Antony had died. He himself had committed suicide when he mistakenly heard Cleopatra had died.
Cleopatra was only 39 when she died.

What an interesting life she led! I would love to be able to go back in time and talk to her.
